Bible Study- “Your Spirit” Part 2

Good Morning Friends!

How are you doing? I’m doing well. How are you feeling? I’m feeling well too. It’s a beautiful day outside (here in Northern MD), I have hot coffee nearby, and with finishing up my quiet time I’m consequently thinking about godly things.

I trust that you are getting used to these Wednesday emails that are like a little get-together in the middle of the week (between Sundays). So far I’ve just been trying to lay some groundwork before we get into the deep stuff.

We first talked about God and His word as being precious. I was just thinking how talking up the Bible is like talking up air. Air is precious too. Without it we would die. But how many of us go through a typical day praising air? Oh wonderful air, sweet air, Bel Air! It’s like I am saying, “Look! The air is so intricate… Who made air? Now, are you giving air its due consideration? How often have you taken the time to breathe deeply and slowly, pondering the wonderful properties of air?”

And starting with last week, we are now considering another thing that, without it, we would collapse on the ground like a bag of meat…

Have you thought about your spirit at any point over the last week? I hope so. Remember, the inner you is the real you, and the real you is so very important. You know, I am spending some time on the “inner you” for a reason. As we take air for granted, it is too easy to not really regard our spirit; Think of your thinking, your reasoning, your mental aspect, your emotions, and your conscience, your internal rational/ irrational self that orders everything about you. All that stuff is by your spirit inside your body.

It can be a challenge to think. Just ask my kids. My kids test my patience a few times during the course of a week. Why? Because they sometimes forget to use their brains. Have you ever found yourself saying to someone else, “USE YOUR BRAIN”? Ha! To think means to use your brain. Oh how much grief could be avoided if people just use their brain. I know I would have saved my parents much grief if I just thought for a minute before doing something that later turned out to be grievous.

We laugh at stupid criminal stories because those people didn’t use their brain. They didn’t think. I’m sure some of you have thought, “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??” I’m also sure some of us have been asked that question by our spouse, ha!

There was one time I was obsessed with cleaning a stain off my car’s windshield. I first tried Windex to clean the stain. That didn’t work. Then I tried soap and water with an abrasive sponge. Nope. Then I tried more soap with scalding hot water with an abrasive sponge. Nope. Steel wool… Nope. Scrape with a razor? Nope. Gasoline… nope. Rubbing compound… No change. The stain was still visible. Hopelessly determined, I brought out a blowtorch to burn the stubborn stain off. Moments after putting the flame to the stain, the windshield cracks and splits before my eyes! I did eventually remove the stain… by getting a new windshield. Ha! That was bone-headed of me and I did not use my brain. I did not think things through to forecast (with some sort of sense) the consequences.

But you know something, a good amount of thinking is required when considering spiritual things. It is too easy to take our inner person for granted. For most of my past I thought of spiritual things maybe on Sunday and maybe during mission trips. All other times my thinking was about what would make Jim happy; what Jim wanted, etc. Every now and then someone would die and that would cause me to think about spiritual things. Every so often I would cheat death myself and be forced to think of spiritual things.

Okay, so, what is my point in all this encouraging you to think of spiritual things and consider your inner person, you ask…

1st Corinthians 2:14
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

In the Bible, a “natural person” is one who has not yet truly converted to Christ. And by implication, the ones who have truly converted to Christ can spiritually discern the things of the Spirit of God, and they certainly do not think those things are foolish.

Can you guess just one big thing of the Spirit of God? How about the Gospel? The good news is that Jesus Christ died on the cross so that our sins would be atoned for and thus we may be reconciled to God. I mean, how many times have we heard that? Many, many times… since Sunday school times.

But the “natural man” can’t really understand the gospel’s significance, because the mind-blowing significance is spiritually discerned. And so by considering God and His word and then considering your spirit, you can catch a glimpse of where you stand.

Do you think the Bible is foolish or foolproof? Do you accept what the word of God says or do you reject it? Do you actively think about the things of the Spirit of God or have they been laid to rest (R.I.P.) in your mind? Does it make sense or is it really nonsense?  If so, why? If not, why not?

I think we all can appreciate King David. Shepherd boy who slings a rock into Goliath’s skull, man on the run made to be King, adulterous murderer to boot!! Nevertheless, he knew how important it is to consider our inner person. Read what David wrote…

Psalm 26:2
Examine me, O Lord, and test me; test my heart and my mind.

To be willing to be scrutinized by your Maker is serious stuff, wouldn’t you agree? And I suggest your willingness (or lack of) directly correlates to how you (your inner person) regard the things of the Spirit of God. Just think about that for a while…

Dear Lord, thank you for this time to consider Your word and Your ways. May our thoughts, words, and deeds bring You glory… and glory to You alone. –Amen

Peace,
Jim

Bible Study Repeat – “Your Spirit”

Hello and Good Morning!

This week, I would like to cover some ground again. We have some additional people on the list and I kept thinking it would be worthwhile to talk about some ground floor stuff before getting into the deeper things…

Like: We are alive. “Woah! Wow Jim, that’s profound!”

Yes. But really it is. Knock knock, who’s there?… read on!

Bible Study- Of God and His Word Part 2

Hi Friends!,

Good Afternoon. I was thinking about what to say about God and His word with you all and I started to think about bread. Huh? Yup, good ole’ yummy bread. Even though I am not particularly hungry at the moment, I can still appreciate the wonderful world of bread. Can’t you?

Perhaps you ate a toasted and buttered English muffin for breakfast… Mmm, those nooks and crannies. (Is that phrase copyrighted?) Maybe you toasted some sliced bread and put jelly on it. Or better yet, maybe you ate an Everything bagel slathered with cream cheese. Biscuit anyone? With honey? With sausage gravy? Please don’t get me started, because if you didn’t have some sort of bread for breakfast I’ll start asking if you had bread pudding last night for desert. Ha!

At our house we have a bread maker. If you have one, then perhaps you know as I do that fresh bread out of the hopper, gingerly sliced so as to not burn your fingers (because you can’t wait), with a slab of butter spread out and melted is about as good as it gets. Those puffy rolls at the Golden Corral or those bread sticks at the Olive Garden restaurant come mighty close too.

To remain a resident in our house, loving bread is required. My son was a little slow catching hold of the bread bandwagon. At first, I had to roll up his sandwich bread into bread balls before he would eat it. Then later he preferred to eat his hot dog without a bun (gasp). But we kept the faith and tenderly admonished him to love bread as we do… and thankfully he saw the error of his ways and now crams it like the rest of us. 😉

Now, lest you think I am tempting you to gluttony, I must speak of another type of bread. This particular bread tasted like wafers made with honey, had the appearance of white coriander seed, melted in the sun’s heat and spoiled overnight! This bread was the bread from heaven, AKA: Manna. The Good Lord provided this manna for 40 years to His people, the Israelites, while they wandered in the wilderness over 3000 years ago…

Exodus 16:4
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not.”

How amazing is that?! Bread raining from heaven. The account goes on to say that in the morning, after the dew evaporated, left behind were small round [thingies], fine as frost on the ground. Wow! There the Israelites were, in the middle of an inhospitable wilderness, on the receiving end of divine hospitality. Notice as well, they were tested.

Jesus Himself was also in the wilderness early in His earthly ministry, led by the Holy Spirit to be tested (via temptations by the devil). After 40 days of not eating, satan tried to entice Jesus to turn some stones into bread to satisfy His hunger. Oh, but Jesus is God in human form, so observe that wonderful scriptural consistency here…

 Matthew 4:4
But He (Jesus) answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

Jesus passed the test, He would (and frankly could only) walk in God’s laws. He also received divine hospitality from angels sent to minister to Him.

Now, can someone tell me what the words are that proceeded from the mouth of God? Ding ding ding, yes! The words contained in scripture; the Bible! Can you see this?

God’s word is so much more important than earthly bread. The Owner’s manual teaches us how to be right with Him. Trust me, you want to be right God. Jesus shows us the power of God’s word not only in His dealings with the devil, but even to the masses of people that followed Him around…

John 6:48-51b
I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever…

Have you eaten this kind of bread? This bread is true soul food. Ha!

Look to your life. If you’re a true believer, you’ve had your own wilderness experience too. You found yourself stranded and hopeless in the desert, your distended spirit desperately searching for relief from the bondage of your sins. And crying out for mercy and forgiveness God rained down His grace upon you. Oh what a blessed oasis of peace can be found in Christ Jesus!

If you hunger for this bread, know that the Lord can never run out of it. The storehouse of His grace is eternal! The table is still prepared, the feast is ready, and the invitation bids you to RSVP ASAP! Don’t delay any longer!

1st Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Bible Study- Of God and His Word

Hello Everyone,

Is it September already? Wow! Autumn is less than two weeks away. Where is our time going? Things are starting up and getting rolling again… things like Congress, school, football, TV shows… and so I thought it would be a good idea to get some weekly emails going again too. Indulge me to talk shop a bit…

In the past, I have written these weekly emails as an additional way to help us consider godly things. We’ve talked about the trustworthiness of the Bible, we discussed some of God’s attributes, (like His holiness), we covered the 10 Commandments and how they relate to true love, and this past Spring we beheld many different names of God and how they speak to His nature. And dear Chrissy (a current email list member) felt inspired to write a monthly message on the fruits of the spirit… ahem… so…  All these messages are archived on the Google group.

The email list has grown bigger, so let’s welcome the newcomers! Hiya peeps! I suppose the best way to look at these weekly emails is as a catalyst for thought and discussion. Lord knows, people on the list like to “lurk”, (that is just read and think), so sometimes it is hard to gauge a response… and others chime in and offer their comments/ questions/ 2 cents, etc. But as always, feel free to respond as your conscience directs!

The difference in these messages is that they are local, home-grown and personal, accessible, genuine, open, honest, and the real deal! I’ll be the first to say I’m a no-good sinner rescued only by the grace of God… On this list we have all kinds of people; male, female, young, old, black, white, a pastor, laymen, happy, sad, rich, poor, etc., And while we’re on this here earth, those who name the name of  Christ are expected to grow in grace. Can I hear an amen? Ha!

This time around, I’ll send out an email message every Wednesday (like today). My thinking is that Wednesday is in the middle of the long stretch between Sundays where you hopefully hear the word from your church pastor.

So now the Summertime hiatus is over, the great endeavor to get our brains back on God begins… woo hoo! Let’s roll!

What a Summer, huh? Craziness everywhere: young kids, the economy, politics, relationships, car repairs, body repairs, and weeds in the grass. I would guess our walks with Christ are all over the map too; some up, some down, some stuck in neutral, some making a bee-line to glory, and others lost like poor sheep without a shepherd.

Dear friends, you know something? What may come and what may go, Almighty God is still in controh. (ßwanted to make it rhyme) And His word (the Bible) does not change. Have you thought of that truth lately? Unchanging. Reliable. Absolute; not all wishy-washy or stuck in a rut like we can be. Check this out:

Malachi 3:6a
For I the Lord do not change;

Psalm 119:89
Forever, O Lord, Your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.

Let that sink in for a moment….

What else is like God and His word? Um… Nothing! Think of how precious a diamond is. The Hope diamond: spotless and resting on a cushioned pad inside a glass display box under guard watch housed in the Smithsonian. I’ve seen it. I’ve been in the Kremlin museum too… no way could anything mess with the treasures in there.

But diamonds and like treasures are perishable. Though precious, they shall fade away one day. Can you fathom that the dusty old Bible you might have buried under other books on your nightstand or tucked away on a shelf somewhere, or the one you carry with you everywhere you go is unimaginably more precious than any thing else? Is contains the very word of Eternal and Almighty God.

The Holy Spirit tells us through the Apostle Paul why God’s word is precious…

Romans 1:16b
…it (the gospel) is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…

“So Jim, what does this have to do with our walk with Christ?”

Well, as humans, we set our affections and attentions on the things we value. As we come out of the season of Summer and into Autumn, with sooo much going on now… what has your attention the most? What are you applying your most precious time towards? What is that great internal filter that everything in your mind must pass through before you will consider it?

Your walk with Christ, your Christian experience rises and falls with what you value the most. The One who knows us best tells it like it is…

Matthew 6:21
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Straight up: The Bible is precious. How have you been regarding it?
